Key Sectors in Mexico
Automotive
The Mexican automotive market is the 7th largest producer and 3rd largest exporter of cars in the world, as well as the 5th largest producer of auto parts. The majority of light and heavy vehicle plants are situated in the Bajio and central regions of the country as well as along the border with the United States. Nearly 80% of Mexico’s light vehicles are exported to the United States, making the industry highly dependent on the American market.
Aerospace
Mexico’s relatively young but growing aerospace industry has become the 14th largest aerospace supplier globally and the 6th largest exporter of aerospace parts to the United States. There are now more that 330 aerospace companies in with a presence in Mexico as the average growth rate of exports has increase by 15% over the past decade. Safran, Bombardier and Airbus all have a major presence in Mexico. As the aerospace supply chain is considered to be “top-heavy” there are multiple opportunities for tier 2 and 3 suppliers.
healthcare
Mexico has a large national healthcare system that accounts for 70% - 80% of medical services, but it is facing a shift as the section of the population facing chronic and degenerative diseases grows. Private healthcare also plays a significant role in Mexico, as private clinics use advanced technologies and new services to attract patients. This has led to growth in the medical tourism industry, with foreign nationals seeking high-quality and competitively priced healthcare in Mexico.
Clean Technologies
Mexico faces a number of challenges in the areas of clean energy, energy efficiency, water management and waste management that could also be opportunities for foreign companies. While a number of environmental public incentives and schemes have been put on hold with the new government, there is still a push from the private sector to increase environmental sustainability. One such example being the private energy auctions held by Bravos Energia.
Security
There is high demand for security products and services in Mexico such as private security services, theft and robbery prevention, communication technologies, CCTV and cyber security solutions. For business, alarm systems, visitor identification tools, perimeter protection, cargo theft deterrence and surveillance and mobile tracking systems using GPS.
Hospitality
Mexico has one of the most developed hospitality sectors in all of Latin America. This is due to the booming tourism sector and a growing Mexican urban middle-class. There are many opportunities to provide products and services to Mexico’s hospitality sector. Some areas of growth include management software, POS systems, eco-friendly solutions, food storage solutions and wood furniture.
Infrastructure/Construction
Mexico has opportunities in building materials as well as in expertise in sustainable building and earthquake engineering. The government has a number of national development projects, many that will involve transportation infrastructure development.
